You might think smoothies are strictly summer fare, but how’s this for a surprise: people search for smoothie recipes the most January until March. Why? New Year’s Resolutions and fighting off colds and flu and during the winter months has us looking for ways to boost our immune systems and lower inflammation. Smoothies are a great way to pump up the nutrition because you can throw in antioxidant-rich fruits, green tea, spices and more in just a few minutes.

Concerned about rising food prices? I was recently interviewed about how to save money on produce and one of my key tips is to buy frozen fruit. You’ll cut down on food waste and always have nutritious fruit picked at the peak of freshness within arm’s reach. By using frozen fruit, you’ll add the perfect thickness to your smoothie and it will be chilled without needing to water it down with ice.

This Wild Blueberry Anti-Inflammatory Turmeric Smoothie is the perfect balance of sweet, tart and spicy. Wondering what distinguishes wild blueberries from the cultivated version?

Nutrition: Wild Blueberries have double the antioxidant capacity of other blueberries. Antioxidants prevent free radical damage, helping lower the risk of chronic diseases such as cancer, heart disease, type 2 diabetes and more. Antioxidant-rich fruits such as blueberries are also part of an anti-inflammatory diet. This diet may help manage arthritis and other inflammatory conditions… even obesity!

Taste: Wild Blueberries are genetically diverse and each berry can differ in flavour from the next. Grab a handful and you’ll get a mix of sweet and tart that can’t be beat.

Heritage: Wild Blueberries don’t grow just anywhere. Sorry, you can’t go ahead and just plant them in your backyard, as great as that would be! Wild Blueberries are naturally found in maine and Eastern Canada in barrens (interlocking plants that spread across fields) that are 10,000 years old. How’s that for history?

To find Wild Blueberries, check out your grocery store or market’s frozen food section. Look for “wild” on the package.
