46 Ideas on What to Hand Out on Hallowe’en Instead of Candy

If you ask any kid (or an adult) to free-associate Hallowe’en and yell out the next word they think of, 9 times out of 10 they’d yell CANDY! And promptly start to salivate. There’s plenty of concern amongst dietitians, pediatricians and dentists about the excessive amount of sugar kids consume on October 31st (and until their loot is gone). This has parents, teachers and all the rest of us asking what to hand out on Hallowe’en instead of candy.

Should Parents Limit Kids’ Hallowe’en Candy?

I offer this list of 46 non-candy options as just that… options. This is a list of items you can give out amongst what you can be sure will be a tidal wave of candy.

Do you think #parents should limit how much #Halloween #candy kids can have? http://bit.ly/2exS8Fo @80twentyrule Click To Tweet

Now I’m NOT saying we should take candy out of Hallowe’en entirely. Each parent will have a different opinion on how to handle candy in their home.

I’ve heard of parents who let their kids self regulate, others who let their kids choose a few favorite items and donate the rest, or put a couple of pieces in their kids lunch after Hallowe’en.

We know that giving kids too many food rules can lead them to have food issues later… so best to allow them sugary treats or salty snacks on special occasions and not sweat it.

Think Outside the Giant Candy Box!

As a child, I always remembered (and got excited about) the Hallowe’en loot that was out of the ordinary. I can still recall being excited about getting a sparkly bouncy ball at one house and at another, wax lips and plastic fangs.

As a result, I loved Hallowe’en almost as much as I loved going to Red Lobster. Remember the “treasure chest” where you got to choose a prize? That inexpensive toy elevated the whole experience for me to the point where I always wanted to eat there!

Ok, back to Hallowe’en. The toothbrushes I remembered for other reasons. Not the move to make unless you want to be hosing down your house after its been egged or spend hours getting the toilet paper out of your trees!

Here are my top 46 ideas for what to hand out on Hallowe’en instead of candy (without getting your house egged).

  1. Great suggestions here! When I was growing up my parents set a rule that we could eat one piece of candy per day – and no more. That way we didn’t OD on sugar!

  2. Great post. I am not sure if kids would enjoy the dry fruits but its worth a try 😀
