Slash Added Sugar from Your Diet

Everyone seems to be talking about slashing sugar from their diets… Ellen Degeneres recently announced on her show that she is on a sugar cleanse, and Today is publicizing a 10 Day Sugar Detox.

The World Health Organization has recommended we limit added sugars to 10% of daily calories, preferably 5%. This means limiting sugar to about 13 teaspoons per day. On average, Canadians consume more than 15% of calories per day in sugar from prepared or packaged foods alone. The average amount of sugar consumed is even higher for children and teens and lower income people. So where do hidden sugars lurk? And why should we be concerned?

Most of the sugar we eat should come from sugars naturally found in nutritious foods like whole fruits rather than from added sugars in processed foods such as sugar-sweetened beverages. Added sugars are empty calories, meaning there is no nutritional value other than the calories, which can add up fast.

Taking in too many calories contributes to overweight and obesity. Obesity increases the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes and cancer.

  2. Great video, I would like to cut down the amount of added sugars we consume in my household. To successfully do that I think I will need to make much more homemade food.
