What Do You Run For? Running for Cheese with the Cabot Fit Team 2017 – 80 Twenty Nutrition

What Do You Run For? Running for Cheese with the Cabot Fit Team 2017

What do you run for? Maybe it’s for your physical health. It could be for your mental health. Or as one of my uncles likes to say, “I only work out so I can eat more!” Spoken like a true gourmand. This September I got to run for cheese. Literally and figuratively. I was selected as one of the influencers to run on the 2017 Cabot Fit Team. This year’s challenge: the Ocean Road 10K in beautiful Narragansett, Rhode Island.

This incredible sponsored fitness foodie trip included some incredible meals, a gorgeous cheese tasting, and of course, the chance to run with an amazing group of bloggers.

My favorite Cabot Cheese: artisan reserve. And it’s lactose-free!

More highlights of the trip included a visit to EMMA Acres farm, one of the members of the Cabot Creamery Co-op. We toured the farm, met the family who runs it, and got up close and personal with some calves who are only 1 month old!

I fell in love with this charming town on the trolley tour we took of the gorgeous ocean road and saw the charming properties along it.

The course is pretty flat… although some of the Florida-based bloggers said it was hilly compared to where they run!

Should You Run When You’re Sick?

My biggest challenge on race day was that I’d been battling a virus for a few days and it was hitting me hard. I struggled with whether I should run or not. I felt guilty for having come on the trip and felt not running would be letting my team down. But was it worth the possibility of getting more sick and feeling worse for longer?

Thanks to Doctor Google, I learned that running when you have “above the neck” issues such as a sore throat, headache, stuffy nose (and I had all of the above) is fine. If you have “below the neck” issues like body aches, fever, digestive issues (I had the first one but luckily none of the others) it’s best to rest.

I tend to be an all-or-nothing person and go back and forth between pushing myself really hard and being a bit of a baby. So I decided I would take some kombucha and medicate myself on race morning and do my best. I gave myself permission to tune into how my body was feeling on race morning. If that meant walking, I gave myself permission to walk. If that meant hitchhiking my way back to our hotel and putting myself to bed, I gave myself permission to accept that if it happened. This was new for me. Being good to myself and not seeing this as “giving up”.

On race morning I was planning to go in the 2nd van-load to the starting line, but it turned out we could all fit in one car. As a result, I was rushed and in my haste to get going, forgot my bib! I didn’t realize that until we were already there. As chance would have it, my poor teammate Nellie Acevedo (AKA Brooklyn Active Mama) was quite ill and on bedrest under doctor’s orders. My Cabot friends had her bib with us, so I ended up putting it on and running as Nellie. So running community, don’t get after her for those stats… it was me! I managed to finish the 10K in 1:01 (1 hour, 1 minute).

Pushing Yourself vs. Shoving Yourself

All it all, this was a tough run for me. I didn’t experience my typical endorphin rush in the first couple of miles. I spent the whole race telling myself, “just a few more minutes”. I thought about walking but then considered how much longer it would take me. That’s why I kept on running. It was painful. It was not fun. But afterwards, I felt proud of myself for seeing it through.

I think I was able to push myself harder because I was running under someone else’s name. I didn’t want to let my teammate down and I wanted her to be proud of our time. I felt like we were running together, and I think that’s what helped me keep going. Funny how if I was running as myself, I might have seen things differently.

Now, I share this story of running while not feeling great not to condone running when you’re sick. If you’re not feeling well, rest. It’s what your body is telling you to do. But this was a special event and an opportunity to run with a team – something I’d never done before. I had to try and listening to my body was a big part of that.

If you ever get the chance to run the Ocean Road 10K, do it. The surf and rocky shore is stunning. The sea air is breathtaking. And you get a prime spot for post-race photos because it ends at a gorgeous sandy beach!
