Looking for a quick and fun healthy snack? Try my Sliced Plum Donuts using protein-packed natural almond butter, coconut cream or Greek yogurt as the icing and dried fruit, seeds and spices as the sprinkles.
This super quick and easy snack hack is healthy and delicious! Such a fun way to make fruit seem like an even more special treat.
Trick Yourself Into Healthy Eating
Isn’t the power of suggestion incredible? My aunt who has young kids recently told me that her kids ask for yogurt for dessert because she calls her yogurt parfaits “sundaes”! The kids love them because they think they’re a treat… and also they get to have fun decorating them with fruit and nuts. They never ask for actual ice cream anymore 😉
That’s where the genius behind these “donuts” comes from. They look similar to the sugary, deep fried version but they’re so much healthier. And more fun, because you get to decorate them yourself!
This is a great way to get kids to love fruit instead of baked goods or other less healthy treats. Get more activity ideas to help promote healthy eating for kids.
Over the past few months I’ve been seeing some fun photos of sliced apples made to look like donuts. When I looked up the recipes I was a bit disappointed… sure, they’re apples… but all of the recipes topped them with icing, caramel and/or candy sprinkles. Not really a healthy snack with all of that added sugar!
That’s what inspired me to create this new and improved version – Sliced Plum Donuts! I had picked up some fresh plums at the grocery store and was going to transform them into a crumble. Then I thought about how their juicy but firm flesh would be perfect sliced fruit “donut” material. And so the Plum Donut was born!
How to Make Sliced Plum Donuts
It’s so easy you’ll laugh. All you need to do slice your fruit in half horizontally (across the plum’s “equator”) and remove the pits.
Slice again horizontally to make 1/2 inch thick rounds that will be your “donuts”. Using a paring knife or an apple corer, punch a hole through the centre of your rounds.
Now comes the best part…
