These tofu nuggets taste like breaded chicken nuggets but they’re vegan and gluten-free!

My taste tester who is a full blown carnivore and believes “tofu gives you boobs” couldn’t get enough of these! (Oh, and it doesn’t, by the way).

Credit for the savory, umami flavour of these nuggets goes to nutritional yeast. Have you tried it? It’s not like the yeast used in baking bread – this yeast is inactive and has a delicious cheesy flavour without containing any dairy.

Nutritional yeast is rich in B vitamins, which are essential for turning food into energy. Fun fact: The yellow colour comes from the concentration of the B vitamin riboflavin! Impress your friends with this new party tidbit 😉

Finger Lickin' Tofu Nuggets

These vegan, gluten-free bites are so delicious, even meat-eaters love them!

  • 350 g (13 oz) extra firm tofu
  • 1/4 cup almond flour
  • 1/4 cup nutritional yeast
  • 1 tbsp garlic powder
  • 1/3 cup unsweetened almond milk
  • 1 tbsp coconut oil, light olive oil or grapeseed oil


  • Wrap the tofu in a clean tea towel and press to remove excess water.
  • Combine all other ingredients in a bowl except for the almond milk. Slowly add the almond milk and stir until you get a paste.
  • Cut the tofu into bite-sized pieces. You can do strips or nuggets if you like, but the smaller bites mean more of the yummy coating. Plus it reminds me of popcorn shrimp or chicken!
  • Roll the tofu bites around in the coating until they're, well... coated.
  • Over medium heat, heat the oil in a frying pan. Add tofu bites in a single layer and brown them on 2 sides.
  • Serve with sriracha or other favourite dipping sauce. Enjoy!
